10 Tips for Eating Well (Part 1)

Nutrition can often seem like an overly complicated aspect of life, but it really doesn't have to be. By following a few simple rules you can ensure that you deliver all the essential nutrients your body needs, to stay healthy and energetic.

1. Choose Slow Carbs

Carbohydrates are largely avoided in the dieting industry, but the truth is our bodies need carbs to repair and restore, particularly when we are working out regularly. Don't cut out carbs, instead choose slow carbs that provide a steady release of energy, such as brown rice and pasta, beans and pulses, opt for whole grains wherever possible.

2. Be Particular about Protein

Protein is key to the growth of muscles, to create a strong and lean physique. Opt for certain sources of protein over others: chicken, turkey, fish, nuts and beans, over beef, pork and lamb.

3. Include Healthy Fats

All too often we are quick to cut out fats when we are trying to be healthy, but good fats are essential to the body and are a key nutrient. Processed fats can be cut out, but plant fats such as olive oil, nuts and fish should be part of your daily diet.

4. Opt for Fibre Rich Foods

A diet high in fibre helps keep us fuller for longer by slowing down the absorption of sugar in the blood stream. Foods high in fibre include fruit and veg, and grain based cereals such as muesli, which makes an ideal high fibre breakfast or snack option.

5. Mix it Up

When it comes to selecting fruit and veg, we can often make the same repetitive choices. It is important to add variety to your diet, particularly when it comes to fruit and vegetables, to ensure you are benefiting from a wide range of vitamins and minerals. To ensure your diet is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, select fruit and vegetables from different colour groups, such as green, orange, red and yellow.
